We prioritized natural light and seamless integration with existing architectural themes to renovate a 1960ssection of a Lower Columbia College campus building last updated in the '80s.
Exemplifying revitalization through thoughtful design, the renovation added a stair and elevator section that harmonized with the campus's brick and glass aesthetic. Originally concrete-walled, we applied a thin brick veneer, giving the appearance of full-size bricks without the need for heavier structural support. This approach enhanced the building's exterior and maintained structural integrity without altering the footings.
As natural light was a significant focus of our design, we expanded the previously infilled window areas from the 1980sremodel to allow more light into the space while creating a signature transformation of an existing stairway, which formerly occupied a third of the corridor's width.
Enclosed in a glass "cube" that bathed the stairwell in light to enhance its aesthetic, the location was also well positioned to accommodate a new entrance at the building's west end.
